As you may have noticed, Emerillon 0.1.2 was recently released into the wild. The next release will come mid July as soon as some internal GNOME things are worked out — mainly the gsettings stuff, which right now seem to be a moving target. I hope to get something done by the weekend.

Right now I managed to get Ania to work on libgeouri so expect a release soon.

Sooooo, as some of you may noticed yesterday Emerillon switched it's maintainer and the new maintainer is me. Scared yet? No? You should be…

If the switch came as a surprise for you then you're not the only one - I'm a bit surprised too, but hey — life is full of surprises! I have some plans for it, but it's my first take at maintaining a project so please be gentle.

For starters in the next few days/weeks I plan to weed out the bugzilla wherever the are patches included and put out a 0.1.2 release out of the door, together with a 0.1 release of the plugins (or rather plugin). Thanks to the wonderful Andreas Henriksson the GSEAL migration seems complete and there shouldn't be any deprecated components, so we are almost ready for GNOME 3.0 ;) Currently the development takes place in GNOME git with a mirror on Gitorious under the upstream branch. This branch acts as a staging queue for me, so any merge requests which don't go to my email should go there.

After the 0.1.2 release the plan looks like that:

migrate to GSettings

migrate to libpeas if it ever comes out

scratch my itch with a plugin for gpx tracks with a calories meter

do some other features already in bugzilla

other ideas welcome

and kinetic templates. All major projects in attendance, Scribus, Gimp,
Inkscape, and Open Font Library, spent time planning activities for the
next year. New projects like the panorama stitcher NONA, Lighttwist, a
system for running multi-projector immersive video displays, and Markus
Weiland's FacetZoom widget, set the stage for new exciting software
developments leading into LGM 2010 in Brussels.

A Preview of LGM 2010

For Libre Graphics Meeting 2010, the conference promoters challenge
all participating projects and people to set goals and plan creative
projects. First, each major project is requested to have set three solid
priorities before the conference to work towards. Second, one or more
collaborative projects is to be developed, beyond just the tools used,
such as a book or animation. And third, the conference hopes to involve

I know the Scribus folks still wait for me to translate the docs, but I think with the recent changes in my life I'll be able to get back to it. You ask what are these changes (well, probably you didn't)? Well, for now I can't tell you much, heck, I can't tell you anything but in due time you will know. After 3 days of LGM I'm back home. I would like to thank Kamila and Louis for making such a wonderful experience possible, great job! It was really nice to meet also those people I've talked to on IRC for the last few years (I wonder how many of them are dissapointed now :P). Thanks to ``Cube I got the possibility to meet the people responsible for the Tango Project who were wonderful companions for me on the first day in Wrocław.

I never like to categorize music, because it's just it - music! Everyone has a different taste, and what's for someone post rock for me is just rock or even something more peculiar ;) We should have a different category for each band, because they all have a different sound (I mean proper bands, not the ones you see usually on the telly).

But let's get to the essence of this foolish blog post - this weeks artist is Gina Artworth. It's a nice mix of a wonderful vocal (I think I fell in love... ;> and noisy guitars. Just mmmmmmmm (yeah, I know - it's an intelligent sentence). Sadly it's already some years old (2003) and GOOG doesn't tell much about what is going on with her lately. Maybe you know? Anyway - go on and listen if you haven't already done so.

There's an open letter over at list.7thguard.net regarding the implementation of DRM in Polish law. I'll try to provide an ęnglish translation for you, although it'll be very rough, blame my poor English skills for that (as a sidenote - I must do something with it if I want to relocate somewhere else...)

We, the undersigned, oppose the implementation of such restrictive regulations regarding Digital Right Management.

The proposed changes in copyright law presented by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage fully legalize systems which allow content publishers freely restrict access to works in digital form. The circumvention of such restrictions are proposed to be penalized with up to 3 years in prison. Those changes will have negative impact on Polish culture, they will hinder or even prevent access to its treasures, lower the position of content creators and harm consumers.

Freedom of knowledge and information is world's biggest achievement - the right to use works in libraries, museums, universities and together with friends. All that because the Fair Use rule. But the proposed changes legalize DRM will eradicate this. Existing today laws which permit the usage of various works for peronal use or which allow sharing them with friends, for educational use, for academical purposes will, free access for libraries, using different works in your own and even accessing them by disabled persons will become empty words. This is also dangerous for the future of Polish culture, because fair use is essential to creativity.

A world, which is proposed to us by the new law project, is a world where you can listen to a song only on one audio player, the movie you have bought will erase itself in a few months, where you can't record a TV show on video and where lending a book will be a crime for which you can be sent to jail.

We don't want such a world. When implementing legislation regulating the usage of DRM systems one should try to keep proper balance between the interests of publishers, creators rights for proper payment and the constitutional rights of society to participate in the cultural life of the nation.

The legislation regarding DRM systems is implemented because that's a required directive of the European Union. But this law doesn't remove fair use, it does even require that member states protect competition and consumer rights. In the EU member states, especially in France and Germany, European law respects those aspect. We should make use of their experience.

The Office of Competition and Consumer Protection, Internet Society Poland, Stowarzyszenie Przyjaciół Integracji and the Polish Librarians Association have publicated their proposals in this matter. We call the Polish government and Parliament to consider their positions

Over at Carstein's blog there's another part of the So you want to be a CSO? saga. This time about internal procedures - how to write them to be efficient and where to use them. I think you'll find it an interesting lecture...

Of course I don't need to tell you that they are needed, but handle them with care. You don't want to learn them all by heart like some companies require, they should be there to reach for them whenever it's needed, so just the generel guidelines should be clear - exceptions can (and in my opinion even should, but opinions on that differ) be included in the text of the procedure. Like Carstein said - a diagram is worth a million words, but only if it's good. I could tell some stupid examples where diagrams said absolutely nothing about the workflow, like when a process was beggining at the controler (on the diagram, and even some places in the text!) when the normal workflow in such environment was that the operator received the document first. After a couple of such procedures most people end up just ignoring them and doing it the way it's best, which in turn can possibly wreck havoc in the system. OK, enough of my ranting - head over to carstein before he finishes part 4 of it, which should be real soon...(in Polish only sorry, maybe he'll translate it sometime for us or I'll do it when I'll finally have my bachelor degree...)

Like the topic says — I'm using PLD Ac again, although it resembles Ra more and more, but hey - at last Mono and Windows.Forms seem to work now :D (they didn't in Th, even when wolf said SOA #1)

Anyway - I hope to install Th somewhere after my engineering degree, when I should have some more spare time. What I would like to see by that time is a working NetworkManager, Sabayon and Peselus ;>

That's it, I'm fed up and currently downloading Kubuntu Dapper Flight5. At least for now it will sit on my laptop. It's just a shame I couldn't make PLD Th work properly with my WiFi card and sound (it did work in Ac thoug, but I don't have the time now to reinstall it from scratch, yeah I removed the chroot just before I've noticed that my sound doesn't seem to work :/) we'll see how Kubuntu works (and if I can get the latest Scribus cvs up a running before saturday :P) but I hope to get Th up and running in a few weeks when I'll have some more spare time...
Oh, and I invite everyone to come and visit me this weekend at "Otwarte źródła wolnej kultury" ("Open Sources of Free Culture") which are run in Poznan by the ACTUS Association (sorry, no english version of the page yet, just go and see the about us page)

Google's quest for world domination?

Hmm, after recently watching EPIC 2014 I never thought of the idea that Google might handle all of my needs. But hey, here it is - the Google Calendar, or at least some screenshots of it.
It seems that Google still isn't evil, because I can see there some interesting features like submitting iCal calendars from other applications, so I can still use my favourite scheduling application!
I'm not scared of the Google Grid, I have nothing to hide, those things I wish to keep secret are always encrypted and stored on my private mail/group/whatever servers anyway. Private information is just that - information. There were always ways to gather them in ways which harmed people more than filling out a couple of web forms (just remember the polish SB just a few (sic!) years ago..). Google's version of the history has one advantage, mostly anything is safe from the Digital Dark Age, thanks to the use of open standards (like that one that you can copy your e-mails from your GMail account via POP3).

Oh, and BTW help save http from an other evil company...

I wonder why didn't I do this before. You know, playing Counter Strike. It's and old game, propably older than my grandmother, but hey - it still rocks! Especially in a LAN environment. OK, they kicked my ass seriously yesterday (and today, some sleep deprivation is always good :P)

Hmm, today is Saint Valentine's Day, but I won't celebrate it as usuall. Not that I had someone to celebrate with... But still, we should show our love everyday not just at this one day. What's the difference between today (2. of February 2006) and any other day? OK, maybe one - it's usually colder now than on most other days... So, just behave as it is a "normal" day and give your love some flowers, like everyday - I suppose you give her flowers everyday? :)

On the other front - I was asked to hold a talk or workshop about Scribus in March, I'm not much of a speaker and I have absolutely no idea if I could handle it. Besides, I'm not a DTP professional, nor a semi-pro just a guy who does some work in it for the ACTUS Association. I must think about that, maybe Maciej (from Linux Forum) could help me out a bit. We'll see...

Libjingle 0.2.0 is out. I must say I'm impressed by Google, an free (as in freedom :P) library, open API's like those for Google Maps and Google Reader (soon to "published").

Hmm, maybe they get the Web 2.0 thing right in some time, where apps from multiple vendors could work together. This could be the real power there - no limit for the users, you want to use our feed reader on your site? No problem, the API is already there for you to use! But for now, just to many services are on their own with no proper means of using their content ("social" or not) on my site...

UPDATE: The moment this post hit the blog, Google enabled Google Talk inside my GMail account, and I must say - it rocks!

Scribus 1.3.2 is out...

Like the topic says - Scribus 1.3.2 is finally out together with the long awaited Windows version (with a little help from Trolltech AS, and I must say it works like a charm on my Win XP.

Oh, RPM packages for the PLD Linux distribution (i686, AC) should be availible somewhere on the main Scribus site as soon as it gets up. If there's anyone out there with a AMD-64 machine willing to let me build it there for some testing (I think the _ulibdir stuff is obsolete for some time, but sadly I cannot test that at home) just drop me a note here.

BitTorrent??

Some time ago there was an idea to use BitTorrent together with poldek to distribute PLD package files. And today I saw this. Maybe I will have to look into this issue after my exams, could be interesting. Generating .torrent files for new packages would be easy, seting up the tracker also, the problem is - how to keep seeders for thousands of packages on one machine? Poldek supports various download managers so downloading will be no problem on this side I think. Of course this could speed up download for the bigger packages, for the small one the advantege wouldn't be so good but it's worth a try...

It seems like Trac has won the "competition". Easy tu use even for newbies (like some other devs on this project), lightweight, works from scratch - even in Lighttpd, supports Postgresql and other database engines and is just looking great with those nifty command line tool. Right now I don't need some of it's features like the wiki engine but it might become handy sometime. As time passes we'll see how useful it is...

Oh, BTW sorry for some outage on Planet PLD, typos in the config file suck :/

Bug tracking systems?

Hmm, I need a nice bug/issue tracking system for my project but sadly I can't decide which one to use. Flyspray isn't a choice, Mantis also fails to get on the list (I need Postgresql support). I'm looking into Roundup and Bugzilla, but the second one is propably overkill like OTRS though both are worth a look, maybe it'll benefit in the future...

So which bug/issue trackers do you use? Oh and as a sidenote - I'm also looking for an app which would help me translating documents into other languages while keeping track of the changes in paragraphs, somethink like gettext where each paragraph would be a seperate entity to translate...

After delivering a wonderful framework like GStreamer they did it again - their offering an mp3 plugin free of charge to anyone who wishes to use it, they paid the license fees to the Fraunhoffer Institute. If you're a distribution maker you can get a redistribution contract from Fluendo free of charge also. The only drawback is that the plugin is incompatible with the GPL license, but there are many players which aren't bound by this, so most of the users can just listen hapily to their music.

There's an interesting post over at Fernando Herreras blog with some interesting ideas. It would be great if package management system would support more metadata (or do they now?) so one could store for example hardware ID's for driver packages which would be easy to find just by doing poldek --shcmd='search -p my_driver'.But this shouldn't be used by hotplug as such, only by the hardware detection tools.

Integrating it with a Linux Drivers portal would be also great but there must be a means to distribute those file to people who don't have Internet access and the portal itself should have a more distributed manner. The driver devs would just need to register their drivers there and they would be fetched by the portal itself without any user intervention {by means of an RSS/ATOM/whatever feed or a simple (more or less) script like pldnotify.awk}.

The sanbox infrastructure would have to be provided by the distributions itself, getting their info what packages to build from the site and sending feedback back to it with the location of those packages. With the state of the Linux kernel as it is today (as seen on kernel.org ) and the distributions theirself I think it would be nearly impossible to make such a centralized sandbox work - just to many patch/gcc incositencies so in the end this portal would be just for the few chosen ones which use the mainstream distributions. A decentralized system should work wonders, giving the driver authors instant feedback on whre it works or on which kernels/gcc it lacks a few issues (all the buildlogs could be sent to the portal and stored or sent to the driver devs)...

BTW I wonder if anyone reads this though...

So it's done, the EU parliament votes for data retention plan. What does it mean for a plain citizen like me? First of all I'll pay for that in my telephone bill (someone said the telcos should take the cost on them - what world is this guy living in??!??), another drawback is that the data about all my connections (even to this blog) will be kept for at least six months and that it won't be anonimised like it should be done now when it isn't used for billing purposes. It just will sit there waiting to be stolen. Now, one could say that only proper government agencies are allowed to view it, but who will take care to ensure that? It's could be done if one would encrypt them with a public key for which the private one is only in the hands of the proper authorities, but I don't know of any legislation which requires that. I have no idea if this would be even enforceable, there would be to many agencies which would need the private key. I have no idea what the future will bring us, I fear that for a few years will have scenes like in Nineteen Eighty-Four especially here in Poland where the government is trying to think for the citizens what is right and what is wrong.

We all knew that the famous company from Redmond was choosing words carefully, but this is just too much. Convincing others(?) to remove entire passages of text in a conclusion of a conference hosted by the United Nations seems like censorship to me. We have something similar in politics here - people come to a conclusion, agree on something but in the end everything comes out different as planned. But in that case it's not about politics, it's about freedom of choice - one should be given all arguments and facts, not just the "I have money, trust me that I'm right <<facts>>".
Oh, as a side note - I've sent a letter to my MEP with some thanks for voting against software patents last september, maybe it's a little bit late but I hope he will like it anyway...

I wish I hadn't seen this post. Now I am scared, if that's what the new MS Office will look like. The toolbar looks like it's as tall as a basket ball player, and it'll eat most of my 1024x768 screen. I hope that KDE/GNOME won't adopt it. Don't get me wrong, I do like different layouts for apps, I like the Kids Office plans, but such layout could be really difficult to use in a INATAS enviroment. And I'd have to use a magnifying glass to see the text in the menus/toolbars.

Erm I mean a small step for Google but a big one for the Jabber/XMPP community - Google Talk is live and it's using XMPP. Everything that's required is a proper Jabber/XMPP client and a Gmail account.
The next step should be enabling connections from other Jabber server to Google's one, because currently you can't talk to them without a Gmail account on both sides :/

Do you know that you can use use it to view your DivX movies on a TV far far away?
No? You do now :)
Don't mess around with all your cables for audio and video, you can have it all in one cat 5e UTP cable - just attach two S-Video plugs, one 3.5mm jack and two RCA jacks. Maybe it's not all that perfect if you want 5.1 sound,but my crappy SB 16 can't handle it anyway and the difference is hardly noticeable.
The video signal also suits my needs and I can hardly notice the difference between using an out of the box S-Video cable and this one.
Now I must just get my Radeon to work in X Windows with TV out enabled :/

Some good news - got a 4+ in computer networks, nice, could be better but I didn't learn for it too much, I still got a job, I'm not ill (seriously) so everything ought to be okay. Nevermind...

Something terrible has happend - I miss you, I really do miss you. Maybe you'll never read this, but this had to be written.
The terrible part of it is that somehow I can't say it to you, I'm just scared(?) or maybe I'm just dumb, yeah, that could be it. Another month will pass and I'll be still sitting here, writing those stupid posts and killing myself piece by piece, ehh...
Maybe some of you want to hear some news from the Scribus/Kexi front. The latter one is missing some translations because of some issues with the new VCS or lack of man power I can't tell exactly - the fact is that there are no translations yet except a polish one from OpenOffice Polska not included in the recent spec file, because I'm waiting for all of them ;)
As of Scribus - it should be out in a few days/weeks as usual so please, just wait patiently.

Thoughts? Dreams? I've spent a few lovely hours with some of my old friends, and when I say old I mean that I know them for more then 2 years. Didn't have many friends before, not such I would like to remember, but that's not the point here. It was good to see, that they are still together after 2 years, and they look as much in love as when I've seen them together the first time.
Somehow I envy them, I would like to have someone by my side, but it's impossible now and I think it also won't be possible in the future. Still, I just can't get used to being alone, even though I'm alone as long as I can remember. One can say: as long as you have your friends you're not alone, but this just isn't true. OK, you can spend some wonderful time with your friends, but it'll never be like, like what? I don't know the feeling when you're together with someone you love, however there's a strange feeling inside me what it could be like. Ehhh, nevermind. After all - you must live the life you were given, because there's no other one to live...

Maybe let me change the topic of this post, I can always write more later.
Expect some changes to Planet PLD because I handed over everything related to it to Patrys. Of course if he agrees I will still handle some adminsitration tasks, like adding new journals, etc. but all the design work is his domain now (not that I would ever have time to fix the current layout :P).

Sometimes I feel like I'm the outsider here and maybe I am.
I think that I'm missing something, while I try to live a different life. But it's still a life - who decides that one is better from another? On the other hand one can define a bad lifestyle, a bad life is when it destroys your body and soul. When your first thought after waking up is I hope this day will end soon or when you think that you must drink something just to get up. I had no job for some time and I must say it was horrible, you wake up and you just don't have anything to do, so you stay in bed as long as you can. Maybe it was just a depression, but still it was a life...

It seems that I'm stuck with kernel 2.6.8-4 on my router and it su%$. Somehow there are problems with it's APIC and the NIC's refuse to work properly. Exactly the built-in adapter. Maybe I'll try sometime to disable it and insert a second RTL8139, maybe it'll work then, but to to that I need a second machine so my users won't whine...

Breaking the rules

Breaking the rules doesn't always pay off. Especially breaking the "if it works, don't change it" rule like I did yesterday. Rule number two: if you do break the first rule, make sure it isn't related to the PLD kernel package.
Spent the last few hours trying to figure out why my second NIC doesn't work and it seems like it's a kernel bug in the 8139too module, giving a lot of "Apr 8 08:53:46 xxx kernel: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth1: transmit timed out". Of course on 2.6.8-4 (copied from an other router) none of this messages appear and everything "just works" ™.
But I have lost ALSA support, boooo. Seems like I'll have to build the kernel package myself...
[UPDATE] It looks like this bug is connected with APIC, enableapic seems to work but enableapic lapic gives horrifying lags – up to 5000 miliseconds to the nearest router...

It seems that I can get back to work again. I have updated the polish version of docs.scribus.net with a plugin tutorial and more docs are soon to come.
There's a nice thread about OSS graphics apps and colour management on the mailing list. Peter reminded us all of a maling list for colour management stuff, so if you're interested then pay them a visit!

Hmm, Planet PLD Linux should be officially IPV6 enabled. It took me a while to get this all up and running, because of some disinformation in lighttpd (the -6 command line option doesn't seem to exist in PLD, instead there's a config file variable...) but is' okay now.
The last few days I've been busy with some unexpected work. I had to move some of my web pages to an other server, pay for it etc and I hope I get everything finished by the weekend.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Ok, first the good news - I have a new job. Well, not so new, because I've been working there a few months ago, but hey - it's a job - well paid (for me) and not so hard ;)
Now for the bad news - lighttpd died a few days ago and no one has noticed it, damn first of all I don't know why it dies, the logs are empty no messages on the console no nothing. Secondly - I don't have any CPU cycles left to replace it with something that Just Works (TM) eg. Apache :|
If that wasn't bad enough - the patent directive was passed by the ministers, so I can drop my studying and learn some washing up ;) No, frankly I sent some snail mails to my MEPs - let's see if they'll answer me..

Uff, finally it works, I'm still waiting for a domain for it but it works :D
It needs some tweaks here and there in the layout code, some internationalization but hopefully it'll be ready on monday (I have my exams this weekend so I can't work on it :( )
